The Double Standard

As I sit here reflecting on this morning's SCOTUS decisions surrounding DOMA and Prop 8, I have to admit I'm getting more and more tired of social media.  Maybe it's more and more tired of people in general, I guess.  We seem to live in an unfiltered world where what people say has no bounds or consequences.  That is, if you're part of a certain group.

Don't get me wrong, discrimination sucks.  However, while discrimination is progressively disappearing, reverse discrimination is taking its place.  It's okay to be considered a minority and bash the majority for some reason.  Or worse, it's not okay for someone to think one way, but it's okay for others to discriminate his/her thinking.  That may not make a lot of sense, but I get what I'm saying.

Maybe an example:

Person #1, heterosexual - "Gay marriage is a sin according to my thinking."
Person #2, homosexual - "You're a horrible person for thinking that way, and you should be ashamed of yourself."

What's wrong with that scenario?  There's a difference between educating somebody about your beliefs and completely disregarding someone's beliefs.  In my opinion, the whole purpose about sharing beliefs is to understand others better.  Heck, you might even persuade someone to think differently.  But for the sake of freedom, we have to remember that we all think differently, and that's okay.

The other thing that bugs me about reverse discrimination is the double standard of wanting your opinion heard while in the minority but being unwilling to hear the opinion of someone in the majority.  Hey Kettle, Who Ya Calling Black?!

Sorry, this post was written over a couple of hours while distracted, but I just had to get that out of my system.  Moving forward, I will still think this way, and I hope others do, too.
